Winner of the Pritzker Prize in 2000, Koolhaas is the author of the seminal Delirious New York (1978) and S, M, L, XL (1995) among numerous other books, and his buildings include some of the most iconic structures of the early twenty-first century. I'm not a philosopher or student of philosophy, but I am continually amazed by this author and this book. I wouldn't have thought that a work of philosophy about a period I hardly know about would provide so much spiritual inspiration and encouragement.It is a work of philosophy, and there is a limited amount of "technical" vocabulary to absorb in the reading, but it's just a few words, really, nothing a good dictionary can't handle. And Gilson's exposition overall is very plain-spoken and common-sensical. I wouldn't say it's an "easy" read, or a quick one; but that's not because of any lack of facility on the author's part.The subject matter itself, the historical development, reality, and import of a truly Christian philosophy, demands full attention, and Gilson takes pains to help us really understand why Judeo-Christian revelation is the necessary basis for Western philosophical development, and why that development is undeniably important to the Catholic Church, and to ordinary Catholics.The author is an eloquent speaker, (the book is drawn from a series of spoken lectures,) and knows how to carry a very lengthy and very complicated topic to a varied audience. Like St. Thomas Aquinas, Gilson repeatedly refers back to supporting material from his earlier chapters.Also, I was surprised by his wonderfully disarming sense of humor, and upheld by his clear appreciation of and respect for ordinary people who may find themselves interested in his topic. The content, so richly portrayed, is a history that is virtually unknown to the average Catholic or Christian.If, like me, you've heard the names of great thinkers in Catholic history, like St. Thomas Aquinas, or Sts. Bonaventure or Augustine, and if you've heard of great classical thinkers, like Aristotle and Plato, and some modern thinkers, too, like Descartes and Kant, but are unsure just what they said, and how their thought affected the world's understanding of simple things like Who, What, and Where God Is, Etienne Gilson's "The Spirit of Mediaeval Philosophy" is tremendously worthwhile food for thought.

This book gives a great overview of the philosophical underpinnings of modern thought, as told from the perspective from a Neo-Thomist. Gilson is a master of his trade, as evinced by the fact that the book is very readable (at least for students of Philosophy!). In my lowly opinion, this is a definitive work that should be on every serious philosophy student's shelf, and it is a shame that no one is reprinting it at this time, so grab up all the available copies while you can!UPDATE: It appears that this book is again (thankfully!) being republished. After a second read-through, I stand by my earlier assessment that this is an excellent text though not exhaustive by any means. It is however an excellent overview nonetheless.

This is a superb book by one of the leading Thomist philosophers of the 20th Century. It is written is clear, accessible language, while remaining true to its subject. The method is historical.

Gilson evidently took deep offense at the cliche that Medieval philosophy is merely imitation pagan philosophy. Using all his academic prowess, he radically de-bunks that myth, and presents an intricate system of thought guided by faith and grounded in reason which far surpasses the reach of Aristotle and Plato. For the student of Scholasticism, who most likely is not interested in the historical approach to philosophy to begin with, will happily find this work to be, first-and-foremost, an exposition of Medieval thought in itself, and a historical work secondarily. Gilson is indeed a superb historian, but a formidable philosopher first.

I have been a dedicated student and practitioner of Buddhism and meditation for many years. I have also read much about the Christian, contemplative mystics. This amazing book fuses these two areas of focus and paints a portrait of a beautiful world where the unity of the transcendent merges with the daily life of multiplicity in which we all live.I had not been at all aware of Evelyn Underhill prior to reading this book but it's profound effect on my view of life, death, why we are here and how we can live joyful, meaningful lives, compels me to read everything she has written. The most amazing aspect of reading this book is that it was written almost 100 years ago but speaks to the reader in language and images that are as contemporary as any of the more "lightweight" tomes on meditation that flood the market. This book is the "real deal" and it's message is priceless.

As descending darkness in our social-political world tempted me to set aside contemplation as irrelevant, I stumbled across this little book on practical mysticism. As Europe plunged into WWI, Underwood offered this guide to contemplative prayer as a way to face reality and thus engage in the world with deeply rooted hope. Poetic, learned, and wise this book is just what I need a century after its publication. I feel led to this book, and this book will lead to more works by Evelyn Underhill along with more engagement in the world.

I found that this book touched my heart in unexpected ways - having read a number of the less favorable reviews, I can concur that the author seems to ramble and that sentences often do not make (conventional) sense. One reader mentioned that trying to describe mysticism may be impossible due to the nature of the subject. I would agree, but if you are seeking the way of closer union with God, Underhill captures some of the frustrations and excitements of that journey. Don't give up - try reading it again another time, when some of her observations may make more sense!

One of the best books I've read this year. I love reading middle grade books because I teach middle grade students. This is one that will be on my shelves the day it comes out. Who wouldn’t love a story that had middle school age kids with all of their issues, monsters, a spooky house with talking animals? On top of that there is a monster in the woods called the Garr.The book opens with Lucy Tinker sitting in the display window of her dad’s clock repair shop. She is sitting there because she is in trouble. Her brother is trying to help her father. As they begin to close up a gentleman enters and makes a proposal that seems too good to be true. Mr. Quigley wants Mr. Tinker to repair a cuckoo clock in an old house he has recently acquired. He throws down a large amount of gold as an advance. Up to this point the family has had it financially tough. It doesn’t help that their mother had died from cancer two year before. Lucy seems to be the one who is often impulsive yet seems to be the glue holding them all together.Mr. Tinker agrees to move to the house and fix the clock. It seems that Mr. Quigley didn’t tell them everything they should have known. The house is very peculiar. There are talking animals. The woods seem to be alive with something evil within. Lucy can tell that something is not right. There father is thinking about how far the money would go. Trouble is not that far away. This book definitely takes you on a journey. The characters are very well done. My students could easily identify with them. Some of the problems they face are the same problems my own students face each day. This has easily become one of my favorites of this year. The adventure, magic, overall story will draw you in and hold you there for some time. I highly recommend this book.I received an advance copy to facilitate my review. The opinions expressed here are my own.

I hope this is part of a series, because I'd love to read more of the Tinkers' interaction with their magical new home. A definite page turner and attention grabber, enhanced by illustrations. Has some definitely scary passages, but a spunky heroine, a brother who's not a clod, but a worthwhile person, and some wonderful animal friends - at least for a while! Good mystery, too.

I expected this book would take off on a similar funsy-steampunky-magicky sort of action/adventure path. I was wrong, sort of. This opens as a more carefully, tightly, and elegantly structured book with many lovely throwaway lines and turns of phrase. The characters are appealing and the pace is more measured; the atmosphere and settings more richly imagined. Indeed, the whole magicky angle doesn't even show up until more than a quarter of the way into the book, and well after the Gothic setting and the interesting characters have been established. After that, of course, the magic clock and its weird characteristics start to move to center stage, so there's still quite enough Odditorium-style creativity to satisfy fans.But at the outset it's the quality of the writing that first impresses. Our heroine, eleven year old Lucy, sits cross-legged in the display window of her father's clock shop. She looks out through the backwards word "clock" and the "o" and "c" look like a pair of spectacles. Isn't that a nice image? That's what I'm getting at in terms of writing. The book zips along, but nicely placed lines here and there establish a more interesting atmosphere, more appealing characters, and a more layered fantasy reading experience than what I think of as usual for a middle grade fantasy actioner.Of special interest and appeal is the relationship between the two sibling heroes. Lucy, the younger of the two, and eventually the main character, is a mix of feisty and dreamy. Older Oliver is introduced as a bit of a nerd, but he turns out to be a substantial, empathetic, and resourceful hero. The two siblings support and encourage each other with a deep and authentic mutual understanding and regard that avoids all of the usual battling-siblings cliches you find so often in middle grade fiction. These two appreciate and respect each other, count on each other's strengths, and allow for and forgive each other's weaknesses. It is refreshing and upbeat to have resourceful and self-reliant, but still cooperative, good-humored and supportive, siblings.All of that said, the magical animals, (why have just one when you can have twelve?), do go right up to the edge, and Funaro can't resist having a complex piece of magical machinery at the heart of the action. MILD SPOILER. The house and grounds are constructed of "light" and "dark" materials and they have to be kept in balance. Because the house is out of whack everything is going to pot. Why it's out of balance is the central mystery. But even here the magicopunk is less central to what's going on, and it never overwhelms the heroes. The themes are more personal and character driven, and the energy is drawn more from enchantment than magical mayhem. That said, though, there is more than enough action - hiding, lurking, running, resisting, fighting - to keep the pages turning. At times the book can get a bit complex, (especially toward the end), but there is a fair amount of monologuing and explaining by the characters, and if the reader pays attention to these well placed mini-info dumps it all makes sense.So, this was a treat. Good writing complemented engaging characters, and the magic light/evil angle added a lot to the magicopunk vibe.
