For me, this was a refreshing update on latest trends in India, after having read more than 10 years ago a similar book by FT’s Edward Luce (In spite of the Gods).If you are a regular reader of publications such as The Economist or Foreign Affairs, you may already have read about most of the topics discussed in this book. Still, author does a good job of putting it all together and making some coherent arguments. As with Luce’s book and most other Western media, there is a bit of pro-muslim/anti-Hindu bias in this book. For example, author spends chapters and paragraphs describing rising Hindu nationalism and its sometimes regrettable consequences such as Hindu-Muslim riots. Yet he covers in just a few sentences the root causes of that nationalism such as unwillingness of Muslims to co-exist peacefully with Hindus (which was the root cause of British India’s partition too), the violent section of Muslim society in India that started riots in Gujarat in 2002 by burning alive Hindu pilgrims or ethnic cleansing of Hindu Brahmins (pundits) in India’s only muslim majority state of Kashmir. Author also fails to mention that muslims are not living peacefully with non-muslims in any muslim-majority country in the world or that Hindus never have had any riots with other minority religions in India, such as Christians, Jains, Buddhists, etc.Other than this bias, the book is a good read.

The country has a high percentage of young people with a potential for population explosion in the future that won't bode well for the country's wellbeing overall given the diminishing natural resources like water.
