Having vivid memories of Jesse "the Body" Ventura ,professional wrestler, I expected a brash, highly opinionated book. I was surprised by the sensible,well-thought-out political positions and ideas in this book.I believe that he was 100% accurate in his 2000 assessment of George W. Bush as well as his statement that elected officials all too often serve the party instead of the people.The advantage for incumbents and the never ending campaign cycle for reelection are also valid observations.Jesse Ventura did provide some interesting ideas-unicameral state legislature,national sales tax(looks a lot like the Fair Tax of this current Presidential election season), 4 year term for Senators and Congressmen, tort reform, trade with Cuba, repealing the 16th Amendment.I don't agree with all of Ventura's positions, but he has a thoughtful, no-nonsense attitude about tackling the political problems that have only gotten worse since the printing of this book! A lot of his ideas are bold and worth a long look.

Will a single chamber automatically reduce voter apathy and the influence of special interests? Instead of limiting terms, limit the meeting time of the legislature so they'll only concentrate on important items. They should spend most of their time with the citizens, not the lobbyists. Alexis DeTocqueville's "Democracy in America" explained why there are two chambers. A yearly elected Assembly to respond to the people's wants; a triannually elected Senate to provide a more farsighted view as to the people's needs. The Senate would also impeach judges, state officials, and the governor as needed. The one state with a unicameral legislature may also have an egalitarian and homogenous population with similar interests.The cure for too-powerful representatives is simple: select committees and chairman by lot. Once these elections can't be fixed the power of the special interests will be greatly reduced.The correct campaign reform law is to ban all broadcast political advertising; they are either lies or half-truths. Printed literature will last long enough to check the promises against the achievements. Candidates will not have to sell their souls to the devils of special interests. The next step should be to ban any contributions from corporate entities; they are not real people. This will return campaigns to a very level playing field.In "Tort Reform: Civilizing Our Civil Courts" he asks why so many lawyers are politicians. That was answered by DeTocqueville in Volume I. That's like asking why so many people in rural areas go hunting.In "Tax Reform" he complains about the income tax, and high property taxes. (Isn't an income tax just a type of property tax?) To lower property taxes you must either give localities and counties part of the state sales tax, or part of the income tax. You can't do anything else!There are many other topics covered in this book. Most are common-sense proposals that are unusual to hear from a politician; but J.V. is not an ordinary politician. You should read the chapter on "Education".

Two things upon which Mr. Ventura elaborates are common knowledge: 1) Government is completely out of touch with "we, the people." and 2) The media distort, rather than simply report, the news; like the government itself, the media has become totally self-serving. However, Ventura's numerous examples from his own experiences reveal THE GIGANTIC EXTENT of the corruptedness, which is so shocking it's unbelieveable. A good example is how the media can completely slander someone's reputation using a complete fabrication, no sources even needed. However, this is permissible under the guise of "protecting the sources."This book has fired me up so much for the hope that a socio-political revolution might take place within the generation.Very few issues he discusses I disagree with. I especially support his anti-prohibition views (regarding prostitution, marijuana, etc.) and I get the impression most Americans, certainly of the young, open-minded generation, would agree. I admire him one thousand percent for being one of the few politicians who is vocal in his decree that the War on Drugs has failed, and particularly, in his call for marijuana legalization. He declares, I believe quite rightly, that less prohibition actually LOWERS crime, and he offers sound testimony for this opinion with his own personal account of his visit to Amsterdam's Red Light District, which he says has no more crime than the average white, middle-class suburban neighborhood. I've heard the same thing from other people who've been to Amsterdam (and purchased pot from the "Cannabis Coffee Shops").Most important is his cry for the American public to break out of its current indifference. He reminds us that political corruption only flourishes when we lose touch with our system, thereby submitting our will to our officials' own ends.I don't know how many others feel as passionately about this as I do, but I sincerely believe every American should read this book.

Why a Book on Infonomics?Many people have inquired about what compelled me to write a book about infonomics. Moreover, what kind of crazy person decides to write a book in his "spare time" while in a job demanding much more than bankers' hours?The short answer is that it's been germinating inside me for many years, and kind of bursting to get out. (Yes, much like in the Alien films.) Back in 1999, I casually and kind of tongue-in-cheek coined the "infonomics" term in a META Group research piece, before META was acquired by Gartner, and even before the first incredible Freakonomics book. It took a couple years for me to realize that information isn't formally valued, recognized or reported as an economic asset. From that moment onward, I was on a mission! And for the past couple decades I have been researching, working with clients, developing ideas, and writing articles on this topic among others.After compiling 3000 articles, papers and ideas in an Evernote folder on the topic of valuing, accounting for, and administering various kinds of assets, and having amassed over 300 examples of organizations monetizing information, it seemed  high time to write a book. Thankfully Gartner has provided me with the ideal platform, surrounding me with dozens of brilliant colleagues and hundreds of enthusiastic clients over the years with whom to further explore and develop the infonomics concept. But being either too busy or too lazy (more likely both) to write three separate books on monetizing, managing, and measuring information as an asset, it's packed it all into a single book. Feel free however to digest it as three separate books, focusing on one part or another, depending upon your role and interests.What do I hope to achieve from writing the book? In short, it would be great to affect some kind of awakening that provokes further economic expansion at the hands of a growing cadre of infosavvy leaders and their companies. The book isn't about me nor about achieving fame and fortune. (Most Gartner analysts already have all the tech industry notoriety we can handle. And the book is a Gartner book, so no monetization for me no matter how well it sells.) Rather, day in and day out we Gartner analysts speak with clients who are struggling to manage their data better and do more with it. Their organizations put incredible discipline and resources into the handling and leveraging of other business assets, but not so much with their information. So if there's one question (maybe two) that I would like the book to evoke from business, technology and information leaders, it's this:Why hasn't our organization been treating information as an asset all along, and how the heck can we hope to thrive, let alone survive, in an increasingly digital world without doing so???It would be great to see many of you in any of these roles take some of the ideas from the book on just how to do so, implement them, and build on them.Perhaps the book brings about a revolution of sorts, leading to the recognition of information as an accounting asset, and subject to the same legal treatment as other forms of property. Or maybe the book will compel some bright young economist to expand upon and develop infonomics into a new branch of economics, earning herself a Nobel Prize. But accounting regulations and the field of economics are not really my main concern. More than anything, I'm anxious to see how organizations that internally embrace and execute on these ideas and practices become tomorrow's economic powerhouses.So I hope you and your organization's other business leaders, technology, data and analytics leaders, and architects (at least) get the book. For too long, organisations have used technology as a convenient proxy for information - because technology is tangible, has an official financial value and is something that senior executives can be shown to 'prove' that money was spent wisely. Meanwhile, information languishes in a challenging place... intangible, endlessly replicable, undiminished with use... and completely invisible to the CFO who's not allowed to record information as an asset on the balance sheet.Doug sets out to address the curse of Information: - If something can’t be valued it isn’t valuable - If it isn’t valuable, it isn’t investible - And if it isn’t investible, it’s not improvableDoug does this by challenging organisations to monetise, measure and manage their information assets. He uses great anecdotes from around the world and does so in a very readable style. There are also pages of practical 'how to' steps that create a great action plan.This is a 'must read' book for any executive who wants to embark on the adventure that is digital transformation.

I especially like Doug Laney’s great book, Infonomics, for several reasons. One, it drives home both the opportunity and challenge in data. First, the opportunity: Doug provides example after example of great ways to monetize data and points out that these are available to all. For many, their best opportunities for growth lie in their data.Now the challenge: Again, example after example, but the one that best drives it home is on page 186, “…that some business people prefer plausible deniability over knowing how poor quality the data is,…” As if bad data didn’t bite them everyday. It is hard to see how a company moves forward under such circumstances.Next, Doug offers dozens of pieces of advice. But I want to crystallize one that is particularly important. Too many people view data as “exhaust,” as in the exhaust from a car taking you somewhere. The notion that information is an asset is completely antithetical to the notion that it is exhaust! Sooner or later, you simply have to find a way to place value in data. The last few Chapters offer an assortment of ways to do so. Read these Chapters with extra care, pick one, and sort out how to use it in your company.Finally, Doug advises companies to start with data quality. In the rush to monetize, too many have lost sight of the importance of quality. Done right, it is the fastest, surest way to save some money, build trust in the data, and gain the practical skills you'll need to move forward.

So let me admit at the outset, information technology is an area I'm relatively new to. Doug Laney's book has had a transformative impact on the way that I think about information and I'm incredibly grateful for that. As someone who has a great love of valuation, part III of the book, focused on measuring information on a firm's financial statements, was a labor of love. It's something I've brought to the attention of my agency, and while only in the most rudimentary stages, I've had fun building models that aim to properly value information as a living balance sheet asset, and also to show how variations in the "book" value of information cascade throughout the three financial statements.Perhaps the world's most respected valuation expert, Prof. Aswath Damodaran of NYU, spends considerable time arguing that in R&D intensive industries (e.g. pharma), it's silliness to account for R&D as an expense on an income statement given how long lived the benefits may be. Rather, the Professor argues that these should be assets to be capitalized on the balance sheet. I plan on asking him, but I imagine the Professor would take a similar view of investment in information that is likely to produce benefits over more than one period.Of course, unlike R&D, getting "information" into the financial statements at all - and not just as a footnote - is still a challenge. Here, I believe the private sector will push the accounting bodies, and as usual, the international folks will be ahead. Particularly folks on the buy-side know darn well that information has value, and they're going to use their own models to incorporate such - the sell-side, catering to the buy-side will follow and it'll be a rare instance of the accounting boards following the banks.In any event, as the section I was most at home with, this is A+ material, Mr. Laney dives deep, and it's needed to truly understand the crux of the accounting dilemma.Likewise, I was reasonably at home in the book's first section on monetizing information. Thanks to the author for expanding my horizons here. At a marketing agency, while we have some information that's valuable, I'm not prepared to call us info-intensive. But that is changing slowly but surely. And knowing my industry, I see opportunities here to get ahead of the field.Admittedly lacking experience in managing information in any official capacity, I'll need to reread that section of the book, but it'll be well worth it. Being able to be part of the conversation always matters. As we encounter more and more folks with AI and ML solutions, the one thing I know with certainty is that any wonders those tools have to offer will go to waste if there's insufficient data or the data isn't in usable form or use cases are insufficiently defined. And the adequacy of good data remains a tremendous problem in most of the fields I hold dear (certainly law and marketing, finance perhaps a bit less so). As the author notes, it's likely a good thing that the first wave of commercial big data offerings failed. Way over-speculative.This is a different type of review for me in that ordinarily, I'm praising a book that I can say with some authority is the best in its field (because I'll have read the competition). I still think Mr. Laney's contribution is profound, however. This book teaches complex concepts but one can happily follow along; the examples are terrific; the flow makes wonderful intuitive sense; and without any need to be overly provocative, it's a strong call to action. Business folks, whether IT or not, are going to be grappling with information and data for the rest of their careers - indeed, their careers may be defined by it.I would take this kind of forward-looking, as applied introduction 1000x over an abstract "introduction to information economics" text. Extraordinarily impressive and highly recommended and I suspect I'll have more to say upon a second reading. Thanks Doug!

I have only finished four chapters, but love it. Superb and humorous narrative on the property of liquids. Interesting historical/mythological digressions that provide deep and lasting insights.

I picked this book up on a whim because I have ongoing issues with liquids. Roughly 20 years ago we moved to the windward side of Oahu which is essentially rain forest. It rains 24/7/365. ...maybe 355. I frequently wake up in the middle of the night because of my inability to breathe liquid, and look out on my back yard which has pools of same. My relationship with liquids is not particularly good at the moment. It is, however, pretty fruitless to do battle with a state of matter. When the opportunity presented itself to understand it somewhat better I decided to give it a go.Mark Miodownik has written a surprising and immensely entertaining book on liquids, to include those which sit right on the border, like tar and peanut butter. He stages his discussion on a transoceanic flight which brings the subject into sharp focus as he argues the property of peanut butter with TSA and goes on to discuss the subtle differences between same and kerosene or nitro glycerine. He strikes a unique balance between levity and serious science in a way that engages both scientists and those who would nod off during a drier and more direct discussion of the topic, or so I think. I fall in the first camp.I not only got a refresher on a subject, or point of view which I had not considered in many years, but learned a good deal on the way. It is not and easy task to write a general interest book on science and keep it interesting, even more so to do it in a way which is neither condescending nor too obtuse, and one which does not require an introductory course. He must be a wonderful professor. To be able to so engage people in print is quite a trick.All that said, I am not quite sure who this was written for or who to recommend it to. I believe that just about anyone could pick it up, have an enjoyable ride and learn quite a bit along the way (to include practical topics, like how to make the perfect cup of tea, a skill which likely needs some honing for those of us in the Americas). This does present an opportunity for those of us not lucky enough to study at Cambridge to experience the gifts of a great popular science educator..someone who understands his subject matter so well he can bring it down to earth even for the uninitiated. Though somewhat less well known, I would compare his writing to Carl Sagan, or Brian Greene (maybe less well known to those who have not tried to grasp string theory) or even Bill Nye or Neal DeGrasse Tyson.That said, perhaps it offers something for everyone. I do believe it is a book that just about anyone can enjoy.

Mark Miodownik is Professor of Materials and Society at the University College London. He studies the properties of matter and their applications to various areas of science and engineering. His first book for a general audience, Stuff Matters, so fascinated me that I wanted to go back and reread it as soon as I had finished it! In Liquid Rules Miodownik continues his exploration of one important type of material, liquids. Before he discusses specific liquids, though, like a good scientist he defines his terms. Just what makes something a liquid? Is peanut butter a liquid? Yes, he says, and so does TSA in American airports! ( In layman’s terms, liquids are just things that assume the shape of their container.) After the introduction, each chapter talks about a different type of liquid, specifically the liquids he encounters on a transatlantic plane trip: Explosive (jet fuel), Intoxicating (alcohol), Sticky (glue), etc. There is a LOT of science, including diagrams of molecular structure (There were some passages where my eyes glazed over a bit.), but also history, little-known information, like the fact that George Orwell, in addition to writing about dystopias in 1984 and Animal Farm, wrote about how to approach utopia by publishing eleven rules for making the perfect cup of tea, and fun tales like Miodinow’s account of his experience getting VERY close to an active volcano or the story of Professor Thomas Parnell of the University of Queensland, who studied what happens if you dump a bunch of tar into a funnel and let it sit for more than 80 years.While Miodownik is explaining the properties of various liquids, he naturally talks about how they are used. I confess that I never thought about how wings are attached to airplanes, and I was more than a little disconcerted to learn that they are GLUED on…until Miodownik described the nature of glues and put my mind at rest. Well, mostly at rest.Some of the liquids he chooses to tell us about are fairly obvious choices, like the jet fuel; others are more idiosyncratic. I was especially intrigued by the discussion of saliva in the chapter Visceral. Saliva is certainly not something that we think about very often, but it plays a big role in our everyday lives, as Mlodinow engagingly explains. I never realized quite all the good things saliva does for me, and I am once again amazed and grateful for the wonder that is my body. Given his intimate acquaintance with saliva and everything it can do for our gustatory pleasures, I guess I should not have been surprised by his rapturous description of just what a good cup of tea should taste like or by his cogently argued case for why you should order coffee rather than tea if you are in an economy-class seat on a plane.Any reader interested in the world around them will find delights in this book, but it will be of most interest to those who can remember a fair bit from their chemistry classes in high school or, better yet, college. Others may need to skip a few paragraphs here and there and move on. So just relax and go with the flow; after all, that is what liquids do!

This is another one of those fun pop-science books that teaches you cool things in a fun manner. He tells the story through the story of an airline flight, starting with the thousands of gallons of kerosene that get loaded into the plane. He explains chemistry at just a deep enough level that even a layman can understand why we use kerosene in lanterns and not gasoline, and why we can cook with olive oil, but also use it for light. He explains why olives were so important to ancient societies, and why whale oil became a prized commodity in the 19th century. As he continuse talking through why alcohol makes us drunk, or glue sticks to things, he maintains a focus on his airplane theme. It makes for a fun unifying piece as he walks us through the science. It's just a fun book - I liked reading it on a Saturday afternoon in a sunbeam.
