This is the first book in a war story series. It’s an alternate WW2 history so to speak because it deals with events that did not happen and for that matter would not have happened. The plot is contrived, unbelievable and makes no sense at all. Concerned about Germany using nerve gas, Briton launches a nerve gas attack of their own on a German nerve gas production facility located in a concentration camp, killing everyone including the mostly Jewish inmates. They believe the raid will demonstrate Allied willingness to use chemical weapons, which will convince Germany not to use gas in the upcoming D-day invasion. It’s too long and can easily shed 150 pages. Despite this the plot is imaginative and I found it somewhat entertaining. A warning though. The book contains graphic descriptions of violence in a concentration camp which many readers may find disturbing. I rate this as two and a half stars. It’s worth reading if you can buy it for a buck or so but it’s not worth the $10.00 I paid for it.

Excellent read, couldn't put it down.I only recently discovered Greg Iles as an author, I bought his latest book "Natchez burning" for my book club and was so excited to find a "new" (new to me that is) author who writes books so vividly that you get completely drawn in and feel like you personally know the characters and are living in the plot yourself. My husband also thoroughly enjoyed Natchez burning and I set about looking for Greg Iles other books and reading their reviews. I am so happy to find that he has written many books all with great reviews that are just waiting for me to read. I chose Black Cross as my next read as a couple of other reviewers wrote that Spandeau Phoenix was a fantastic book (his first novel) . Amazon says that Black Cross is book 1 of 2 and Spandeau Phoenix is book 2 of 2 (not sure why that would be when SP was written first so I hope this is correct).I am not going to repeat the storyline as there as so many other reviews to this effect, but can recommend that if you enjoy a good thriller, packed with historical detail, no matter how graphic, but written with a modern day twist and characters that come alive and personal, then you won't be disappointed.Even though this is an older book written in 1995, it is well worth every cent spent and it still right up there with all the no.1 novels of today.

I give this book 3.5 stars, rounded up to 4. For its genre -- WW II spy books -- it gets 4 stars. It's filled with rich historical details, complex plot twists and interesting characters. Maybe a few TOO MANY characters, actually. Here's a tip: If you're not great at keeping track of multiple characters in long books, you might want to actually make a list of them as you read this. Toward the end of the book, the author switches perspectives so quickly that it's easy to become confused.Which brings us to rating this as a novel: only 3 stars. Why only 3 stars? It's just too jam-packed with wild action and gore to the point of reading like a Quentin Tarantino screenplay. Much of it does advance the plot, but some of it is just gratuitous. Be warned that it helps to have a strong stomach while reading this one.

One of Mr. Isles best! His attention to detail, use of historical facts, characters that come alive, and use of multiple subplots that he weaves and then draws them all together make this novel impossible to put down. As the daughter of a WW II marine who fought on Iwo Jima, I have an intense appreciation of what the "Greatest Generation" sacrificed for us, and as I read this, it reawakened that feeling, albeit these characters are fictional. But they exemplify the men and women who saved us from the cataclysm of the madmen of WW II.It also serves as a reminder that mad men still exist and action must be taken before atrocities from them are allowed to occur. Not a "preachy" novel but it surely gives the reader pause to contemplate war and the men and women who are thrust into its hellish nature.

I recently discovered Greg Iles after reading Natchez Burning (yes, I realized about 1/2 way through it was a series) and have been burning my way through his books since then. His books grab me in the first pages and keep me interested all the way through. This book was a little different though. I was surprised when I read the synopsis because most of his books are set in Mississippi in the current day and age. This book takes place during World War II, in England and Germany.Despite the change in atmosphere and era, this book was engaging, suspenseful, thrilling, and educational. Its always difficult to read books that describe the horrors of the Holocaust and World War II, but this book is written to entertain, so although I was saddened at times, I did not feel like I needed to put it down or take breaks to get through it. Although it has historical context, it is ultimately a thriller and what Greg Iles does best.

Greg Isles is a brilliant novelist that captures the reader's interest in his works from start to finish. Black Cross is an excellent World War II read that reflects the difficult and severe tragedies encountered by Allied Forces as they fought for our freedom against Nazi Germany. The Nazi ruthlessness atrocities against the Jewish people and Allied/Russian Soldiers/POWs are now well documented in history. The Black Cross story line captures the heroic efforts of a special ops mission behind enemy lines to a great fictious novel . Well done Greg Isles! I look forward to the second book in the series.

I read this book years ago & just rec'd a used copy so I can re-read it. Black Cross is a WWll book & I am a woman who is so NOT into war stories. I think it's the best book I have ever read in my whole life & I am a voracious reader. Like if someone said to me- what books stayed with you over the years, that you remember the plot & love the best, it's Black Cross & that Barbara Kingsolver book, the Poisonwood Bible, about the blond family in Africa trying to convert the natives to Christianity. My husband read it years ago too & Jay wanted to read it again too; I gave the book away. And yes, I am waiting for the next Iles book, after Natches Burning. That's up there too! And Jeff Long is also another author who stuff I LOVE! Lynne
