About the Author

Barbara and Myrick Land were working journalists before they married in 1949. I'm posting this two years after reading The China Study and what subsequently followed was radically changing into beimg nearly 95% of the time vegan all the time. This book was a game changer for me. If you find the book hard to follow or understand, buy the audio version because I think you will find it's easier to understand and follow. As a engineer and scientist, I followed up and read some of Campbell's journal papers. I was stunned by the findings enough to have a paradigm shift in what I would choose to eat forever more. Like a smoker that quits a bad habit overnight, I did the same with what I ate. No more fast food, added sugar, junk, cows milk, etc. I dumped the western diet and my 50yr habit of what I ate since birth to simply eating...plants. Whole, organic plants is my food of choice. Over a period of 6 months I lost about 52 pounds, my weight dropped from 224 to 172, being 5ft 8in male, this was noticeable to all I new. Seeing is believing. My blood screening numbers are all normal except for B12 and Vit D were found to be low; so I take supplements for only those two things and feel fantastic. Im going on to my 3rd yr now after reading this book and changing to whole plants I feel like I did when I was in grade school with energy and skip in my step. Im writing this with the hope that it gives someone inspiration that they (you) too can do it too. Never being a gym person, I've recently begun to add modest exercise 1 or 2x per week in the past 6 months which makes me feel additionally very good after a 45 min workout. But absolutely, the biggest bang for my my health and feeing good comes most definitely in what I choose to eat. Don't get me wrong, I love chicken wings, cheeseburgers, fries, cookies, cake and pie, but they don't love me. I'd say 90% of what's in a supermarket and 95% of most restaurant menus in the US wont meet a true whole foods, plant based diet. If I were to give advice as to where to start, I would suggest after reading the China Study two things: theres a retired Dr. Esselstyn from the Cleveland Clinic that had a simple breakfast cereal he made at home. My version of it goes like this: 1-1.5 cups of raw oatmeal, sliced fresh strawberries, blueberries, figs, dates, rasins, prunes, add fresh blackberries and/or raspberries or whatever fruit you want. Add ground flax seed and chia seed. Add a sliced banana or two. Add unsweetened and unflavored almond milk. Stir the almond milk so it gets mixed in the raw oats. Wait 5 min then eat. Its very filling. I use all organic produce and oats now to avoid pesticides. The other thing I do is make 2-liters of green smoothies and drink it all throughout my day. I change up the frozen fruit in the smoothie (I'll use frozen mangos, pineapple, strawberries...for leafy green I may use a combo of baby spinach, kale, chard); here is an example of a smoothie I made today: 3 cups baby spinach, 1.5 cups of frozen berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries), 2 apples, 2 pears, ground flax seed and chia seeds, 2 bananas, 2fl-oz of almond milk+2fl-oz of spring water. Blend. Makes 2 liters. Strongly recommend using a blender like a breville "the boss" (i use this and like it alot, sticker shock on price so get ready) or blendtec. After making the smoothie, take two to three large containers of the smoothie with u to work and drink this all through the day. Carry one of these containers with you around the office or in meetings like its you're new coffee mug. Lol. I dumped milk and dairy, and check the labels...I absoultely won't eat anything with added sugar. For dinner, I started out using the "big salad" recipe that can be found at chrisbeatcancer.com In two weeks of consisitent eating whole plant based diet, I began to notice the change and feel better overall; the positive change in two weeks kept me going, week after week, month after month. Dont let people put doubts in your mind. If I can do it, you can do it too if you want it. I hope my note is helpful.

These contributions were attempts to generalize Einstein's theory of gravitation, and, just as in that theory, made use of concepts from differential geometry. Ideas from the mathematical theory of groups were also used, setting the stage for later developments in particle physics. One can only wonder of course what these individuals would have thought about modern theories of gravitation and particle interactions, making use of highly esoteric and complex mathematical constructions. I picked this book up when it first came out and gave it a quick read. Now, five years later, having just read it again, I cannot believe that it was not as indelible in my mind then as it is now. A combination of original papers, peppered with O'Raifeartaigh's informed remarks and hindsight, produces an eligant book that follows a timeline that begins with the greatest minds in physics of the last century. The fits and starts of physicists such as London, Fock, Schrodinger, and Klein, though viewed as disparate attempts at the time, give way to an understanding of analogous formulations, and the suggestion of something powerful and underlying. This, of course, being gauge invariance, has equipped the modern physicist with tools that has produced the most striking conclusions: QED and electroweak theory to name a few. The way in which these notions arose, I suspect, is not common knowledge. Just as understanding a breakthrough may only require the reading of a few seminal papers by a few people, the foundation of a good theory often is the result of many people and many false starts. O'Raifeartaigh uses excellent judgement in what to include, and what not to, in his book. It does, incidentally, start with Kuluza-Klein, and run all the way though the 50's to Yang and Mills theory of isotopic spin and gauge invariance (conservation).A knowledge of tensor analysis (the index (i.e., f_i,j) type), group theory, and differetial geometry is assumed. Topology would broaden the experience.

A powerhouse collection of papers in modern Physics! O'Raifeartaigh's introduction and commentary brings each paper's contribution into sharp focus (with benefit of hindsight, of course). The papers by Weyl and Kaluza are startling in their simplicity and boldness. If you haven't read them yet, these two alone justify buying the book. The book does assume familiarity with General Realitivity and tensor analysis. I would highly reccomend Lawden's "An Intoduction to Tensor Calculus, Relativity and Cosmology", or Misner's very complete "Gravitation".

It is amazing how it portrays the natural course of the future of relationships not only in America, but in the world (that's me extrapolating, by the way, but it's true). In a global era we can't expect for things to be the same and to just be involved with people the same as we are. This book sheds some light over the way these relationships work and the many ways people have to make it work for them.

Engaging and informative for those families who would choose to raise their children with knowledge of more than one religion and tradition. This is a story about faith and belief and move beyond the boundaries of one particular tradition so that children and adults are aware of the sacred through two sets of eyes--and engagement. Most families are learning about Judaism and Christianity--but there are examples of other combinations as well.

Being Both is an insightful, thought provoking book showing how interfaith families, after decades of being told no you can't, are demonstrating that yes, they absolutely can raise children dual-faith and do so in a way that is not at all detrimental. Susan Katz Miller's primary research, including surveys and extensive interviews of couples, children, young adults, and clergy, as well as sharing her own personal interfaith experiences result in rich, moving story. As a spouse in an interfaith marriage raising dual-faith children, it was inspiring and comforting to read about others who are trying similar approaches and to know that obstacles can be overcome. I hope that interfaith couples and families as well as their extended families and clergy will read this beautifully written book to enrich their understanding of interfaith relationships and expand their perspectives on what is possible. I was so glad to read a book that is so clearly enthusiastic about the experience of raising children in more than one faith. I found myself saying "amen" (silently, in my head, since I was on the plane) almost every page!I really hope that this book gets widely read and distributed. I feel that the interfaith communities where children are educated and families celebrate are still really hidden, so that when people do hear about them they act as if they are part of some crazy, untested theory rather than something that has been going on for years. I was surprised at how old some of the "where are they now?" kids were!I also want to thank you for your honesty in sharing your story. It's not easy. I totally understand the "sighs" you talk about. Good work.

As my husband and I discussed the idea of marriage 21 years ago, we read every book about interfaith relationships we could find. There weren't many available but they helped guide us get to where we are now. Susan Katz-Miller's book is so comprehensive and honest and hopeful. It has reaffirmed for us that the choices we made were the right ones for our family and that we are not alone. This book is great for everyone whose lives are touched by interfaith relationships at any stage of life...interesting, helpful and easy to read, it's a great resource for this day and age. Miller’s book is a self-serving discussion justifying multi-faith religious education of children. This book is not about pluralism, interfaith dialogue or religious tolerance. However, the book is a good read on what interfaith families have to endure. The book is well detailed and document in an attempt to justify the "embracing of two or more religions in one interfaith family". The book provides much source material for the "muddying down" of religious traditional observance by replacing it with interfaith observance by children outside the mainstream of religious observance. The parents of interfaith marriages are being portrayed as being already ambivalent about institutional religion themselves with some being raised in interfaith or religion-less families. The result being that their children are being manipulated into determining which religion or religions by being made to choose for themselves being educated in two or more religions because their parents are unwilling make that choice for their children or themselves. My major concern of the book is that institutional religions are falsely portrayed as being hostile to interfaith families and children. My wife and I in an interfaith marriage of 27 years have attended both mainstream church and synagogue regularly and have been welcomed in both settings. We also raised two children. The book's objective is to have children "cherry pick" their religion or combination of religions of choice in adulthood absolving the parents of responsibility. The book’s real purpose is to portray traditional religious observance as being hostile to interfaith families already struggling to raise children in a religious environment by negating what the traditional religious education and observance has to offer.
