I have been an acupuncturist for 20 years. There are many systems of acupuncture other than what we have originally learned in school. Korean Hand, scalp, auricular, Tan/Tung-- to name a few. I have studied these systems and find them all extremely valuable depending on the situation. And now for another system, abdominal.I purchased Dave Shipsey's book a month ago and am now on my second reading of the material. It is compelling. It is a beautiful system that works painlessly and precisely especially for pain conditions. I feel there is poetry here in being able to image the body based on the image of the turtle and the ba gua. I am of the opinion that it is able to address the "root" of many conditions, going beyond the "branch."I became so excited when I read this book, and I just so happened to have a patient vacationing in Ireland. I asked her to contact Dave Shipsey for an appt. as I wanted to hear her firsthand account of this method. She saw him for knee pain, hip pain and diabetic neuropathy. We talked on the phone shortly after her treatment. She was very enthusiastic and felt definite improvement in her painful conditions. She told me the treatment didn't hurt one bit. She confirmed the claims Dave had made in his book. The book is very clearly written and one can learn the system from it. That being said, I hopefully will be able to take a training in this method at some point. Definitely 5 stars!
Abdominal Acupuncture is a hugely useful, convenient, and gentle mode of delivering an acupuncture treatment, and I would encourage all practitioners to at least consider adding it to their repetoire of techniques. I especially love how abdominal treatments can be easily combined with any other selection of body points, to make for some very powerful sessions indeed. The abdomen is a very safe place to treat just about anyone, and I believe it is the correct method of treating the weak and infirmed, as opposed to using too many points on the extremities which may exhaust the yang energy of patients who might not have much of it. Having first learned about abdominal via two full-priced in-person seminars, I can attest to the fact that all the didactic information I learned in those seminars was contained in this book - and then some. This is a very handy reference, thorough and well-organized without being overly complicated.
I've been an acupuncturist for about 20 years now; and have heard about Bo Zhiyun's method of abdominal acupuncture; but had not had the opportunity to study and apply it. I recently picked up this volume; and read it over the weekend. The author presents the material very thoroughly in such a way that any reasonably experienced acupuncturist should be able to apply it. After reading the book over the weekend, I returned to clinic; and, when appropriate, applied it. Worked brilliantly. One of the nice things about this method is that it is completely painless, and can address symptoms throughout the body. This book is well structured; and is the distillation of the author's teaching the material over several years. The only criticism I have is over the graphics. They are just too small for people like myself who have bad eyesight. Fortunately, there are some larger charts in the back. I highly recommend this for any acupuncturist wanting to add a new tool to his toolbox.
I love this book. I've been looking for a comprehensive text on abdominal acupuncture for a long time, and this is it. There is no other text like it. Mr. Shipsey gives excellent history, theory, and practical advice. A huge thanks to the author for sharing this phenomenal book and knowledge on this topic. It is an enormous contribution to our profession, given that so much of the power and subtlety of Chinese medicine has been lost today. Gentle acupuncture on the abdomen is in stark contrast to "dry needling" which has become so prevalent in the US. My congratulations and and thanks to Mr. Shipsey and his teachers for transmitting this knowledge. Highly recommended to any serious clinician looking to improve results.
Covers the basics of abdominal acupuncture, partly using a holographic map of the body located on the belly. The explanations are clear and thorough. Worth the money. Most of the book deals with treating painful conditions, with not as much detail on internal conditions like poor digestion, etc.
I have been practicing dr. Tan and master tung acupuncture for a few years now and I am always curious and learning new styles that can help patient outcomes. The book is easy to follow and I am finding that just in palpating the abdomen I can verify problems in the rest of the body. I'm sure as I get better at using the style the results will be even better! The book is easy to follow and also has a great section with case studies to help make it more clinically applicable
I have read many acupuncture books over the last 25 years. This has been one of the more clinically and pragmatically useful. Techniques and protocols in this book can immediately be put to use for a qualified licensed acupuncturist of any style. It was one of the few books that actually got me excited to try out. It works and I highly recommend this book. Cameron Bishop DAOM, L.Ac.
This unique acupuncture style isn't discussed in many books, especially in English. I know that Duan Zhi Liang practices it and I have his diagrams. This is a decent book, but the diagrams are poor and the writer's style is sophomoric. There is no real paragraph structure, the spacing is odd, and the case studies are not well presented beyond quaint titles. However, the author has presented an important microsystem that is very effective and I look forward to his next more mature editing of this work. Because I work in a medical clinic that offers no real abilities for the patients to lie on their backs, I use abdominal acupuncture exclusively for back pain. It has a 100% improvement rate with an effectiveness of 30% pain relief of more.
