For someone who has read scores of books on cosmology, astronomy, evolution and quantum/relativity sciences, iI would have thought it impossible to come across something so refreshingly new on a critically important subject matter. This lecture series is far different and new knowledge-packing than anything I have read or listened to in years.Two evolutions are well covered - the cosmic story from the big bang to our planet and a separate Darwinian story of life on earth. This book sheds some new lights on those two topics but the real subject are all the particles here and now (not atoms, quarks or light particles) that come together and diverge to create various cycles on earth. While the subject of earth evolution is possibly only mildly new, the tools used allow the course to talk about everything in an astoundingly new manner.As we all have been conditioned never to forget, all minerals or even particles on our planet are star dusts in a way. The book traverses paths of these minerals from the formation of hydrogen at the Big Bang to now. In Somewhat new and one of the more interesting parts of these particles' journey from the time when they have been tagged to being a part of the solar cloud is possibly in their coming together as clunks to form astroids, meteors or planets including earth. Cosmology books - compared to the discussions here - clearly do not pay sufficient attention to this.The more interesting part is when the lectures talk about changes in earth - and evolution of all the minerals here on earth from the simple group of less than one hundred at the beginning - in the last 4.5bn years. One is almost forced to give a serious thought to earth being a living, breathing and evolving entity. The last one is definitely true as is made evidently clear in the title of the book!The most interesting part by far - more than anything else - is the coevolution of earth and life. The coevolution that proves how the current atmosphere or earth structure is so deeply linked to the biosphere - almost as much as the way life or biosphere is linked to the atmosphere.For instance, this reviewer had no idea - despite many readings on photosynthesis - that the oxygen we breathe is because of the life formed before and not one of the gases that came along when earth began to exist. The CO2/oxygen cycles since the first days, the cyclical ocean levels and also the cyclical splitting and coming together of earth's land planets contain rich historic information on where/why we are at this juncture of earth's life. The book also shows the role played by life on many of the earth's atmospheric cycles.The conclusions are equally staggering. No matter we do or not do, we are destined to alter our planet the way every other form of life before us has. May be that's why we exist. All species will go extinct and a lot before us have gone extinct because of the changes brought by other species' activities. We are abusing it for sure, but the conclusion that no matter what we do, we can not destroy life ourselves and we cannot prevent its and earth's general journey are still highly heart-warming.A must listen for anyone who is interested in any of the connected sciences.

NJ's review (read it, i cannot improve on it) is outstanding and accurate. Focus on the co-evolution theme he describes, he is right on; the lectures will change how you view geology as a subject. It will amaze you how different these perspectives are from the recent past, you likely will feel enlighten as you listen from the first lectures One of my favorite Great Courses of which I own many. I listen to the lectures and then also read the transcript because it is filled with so much valuable content I want to absorb and retain. I was so impressed, I looked at the other courses from the same author expecting him to have insights I was blown away by. It will be interesting what readers think of it decades into the future, whether it will one day be challenged or seen as a foundation for further progress in theories. Finally I would add that as I follow NASA and other exploration probes that are recently producing incredible pictures out to Pluto and beyond, these lectures have me see them with increased awe.

This is a great graphic novel. I would recommend it in hardcover though. It was a quick read. I read it in a night, and enjoyed the Asian-American perspective. Growing up in the Bay Area, I also appreciated the setting even more. Overall, it was thought-provoking, and brought up themes that I have thought about, but never have seen too much about, especially in graphic novel form. This was my first time reading something by Tomine, and I'd like to check out more of his work.

This is a great graphic novella, possibly Tomine's best work to date, telling the dismal story of a disintegrating romance, as well as a wonderfully true-to-life friendship between two prickly, unlikable antihero characters. Ben Tanaka is the book's protagonist, a snarky, self-absorbed cynic who is doggedly pushing his longtime girlfriend away. In between sniping before-bed fights, Ben meets with his friend Alice, and equally cynical but more vivacious grad student who spends her time dodging her PhD exams while indulging in predatory affairs with freshmen students at the University of California, Berkeley. Ben and Alice are two of the most compelling characters to come along in adult comics in years -- they are utterly flawed and utterly likeable; if you enjoy the pleasures of crabby friends, these are people you'd like to hang out with.For me, as an SF East Bay local, the book has a special charm, as Ben frequents numerous Berkeley hot spots -- lunch and a stroll through the trendy Rockridge shopping district, the hustle and bustle of the crowded, grimy foodcourt on Durant Avenue, a conversation in the magazine atrium of Telegraph Avenue's legendary Cody's Books (now sadly closed) and a glimpse at the death of the venerable UC Theater, once Berkeley's greatest repertory movie house. (Ben's character is a manager at the UC Theater, and has to lay off his entire staff when the theater is hit by "temporary" seismic retrofits, which actually happened to the UC many years ago. The cost of the retrofits was too high for the struggling Landmark chain, and they sold the property to some developers who reneged on their promise to fix the theater up and reopen it under new management. The death of this cultural landmark was a great blow to the local community, and it's nice to see the UC immortalized here in Tomine's work. All that's missing is having Ben get a haircut at Frank the Barber's place, just down the street, and the picture would have been perfect.)Even if you're not from Berkeley or the Bay Area there's plenty to enjoy about this book, including its grim assessment of a doomed relationship, and its frank, scathingly un-PC discussions about race and identity for young Asian-American twenty-something hipsters. Wow, this is just story telling at its finest. Ever watch an embarrassing moment in slow motion? That was the pace of the book. The main character's frustrations on society and his views of himself is overwhelmingly college-like. There are some very funny moments in the book. Adrian does a good job addressing some stereotypes but does not openly dispel any of it. I felt that he kind of spells it out for the reader but it is up to the reader to believe them or not and that might be worth more than the story itself. I found myself questioning on how much I really know about other cultures and let alone other cultures that have one or two generations in America. I hope that Adrian Tomine continues the main character in other books.

This book is just as I imagined from most reviews (which is good).Tomine has recreated a new and strange social dilemma of modern America.He accurately explains (through his characters) the grandiose ideas that distract two intelligent Asian Americans from the simpler and immediate discomfort they have with their identity, roles within their families and their personal relationships.My favorite aspect of the main character, Ben Tanaka, is he can't see how he causes his own problems. His jealousy, insecurity, and intellectual snobbery fuel his mean and cynical behavior toward his girlfriend.And the best part is, he's not even consciously aware of what he's doing!I like this because it is very accurate recreation of real life.And as the reader, we can objectively watch it unfold in front of us. You can see exactly where Ben Tanaka turns from kind boyfriend into a cynical brat. And he acts like a brat by his own choosing.This is a phenomenon all human beings share. Not realizing how their own behavior and attitudes are the cause of their life's problems. And the ideas of their era (in this case, identity and race in America) is a superficial lense through which many people try to understand their own suffering.Tomine has accurately described the very human conflict of emotions and ideals.-J_Tom_Moon_79

I've read this every couple of years since it was published and it's remarkable to me how much there is so much to see in this slight volume. My sympathies tend to rearrange on each reading -- Ben is the type of character that makes me veer between wanting to slap him and hug him in the space of a page or two. Tomine has such a knack at portraying awkward moments, there are a couple of scenes in here that feel so real it is almost as if they happened to me.One of my favorite realist graphic novels -- the entire thing just feels drawn from life.

All of Adrian's work is worth checking out. Yet, Shortcomings was a story that made me think about who I am more than any of Tomine's other works; nonetheless, the story and characters are as real as the air we breath. While these should be enjoyable, they mostly make me (and the 6th grader for whom the book was purchased) gnash teeth in frustration. Random "gotcha" information that isn't at all available tends to change the facts and understanding of the various mysteries---nothing that can really be reasoned out (and learning better reasoning skills was the reason for purchase).

You think you have it figured out but then look at answer. The answers are extremely frustrating. Random info is used to solve these.I don't recommend these at all!

These are super fun and get your child's brain working. Your own as well!

The story moves fast and there are not a lot of superfluous bordering on supernatural events thrown in to increase the number of pages. I think many LL novels suffer from such padding, but that does not happen with Dark Canyon. Very well organized and believable. Excellent all the way around.

This is the sixth or seventh Louis L'Amour book I have read and the least satisfying so far. There is much to enjoy. He did not rise to the level of popularity he achieved accidentally and his skills are apparent in this book. The main character is developed as an admirable man in many ways. There is poetry, landscape, atmosphere and scenes where I was artistically projected into a world I have never seen. Having reached the conclusion, after only 160 pages, I was left feeling like he got tired of writing and then said "Yada, yada, yada... and this is how it all turned out much later." Brevity can serve an author well. In this case I felt it just allowed him to move on to something else he was itching to start. I will likely read most, if not all, of his books because his work gives me something I don't find elsewhere. If you are just starting out with him I don't recommend you start here.

The LaMore western always has a bit more than the stereotypical western story. You get to know the characters and their motivations. Itâ€™s not the usual white hat vs black hat stories. This story tells of an outlaw gang, that didnâ€™t set out to be outlaws, but fate and circumstances turned them into one. The gang recognizes the potential in one of its own, and wants he to go straight. Itâ€™s not as easy as it seems

Thoroughly enjoyed reading this book again, for the first time in nearly 30 years. I recalled one L'Amour novel contained a cameo appearance from Tell Sackett. When I remembered this title was that novel it was a done deal. While Tell's appearance is brief, the story itself is good read from the master storyteller of the Old West.

What's to say about Louis L Amour the best western writer ever in my opinion characters you believe in good action and great story pity most of the movies don't live up to the books wish they would do them now as TV shows.

There's no one who can touch his storytelling style. After discovering Mr L'Amour all other efforts at the western just didn't measure up! Straightforward writing that makes you a part or at least a first hand observer of the story. Wish there were more like him to bring our nations past into perspective.

I have read and reread Louis L'Amour's books for over 45 years. Unlike other Western Authors who's detailed descriptions would prose on for endless pages describing "beautiful purple sage brush or the Gorgeous Sioux Maidens" his books brought to my minds eye the splendor of this wide land, the hardships of life on the frontier and the hard won peace the men and women experienced to settle the Western Lands.

Louis L'Amour is a good writer, who's books are predictable and fun to read. If you want unexpected plot twists and bad guys to be heros pick another author.
