In this final book Laura Kauffman is in her 70’s and has seen much in her years with the death of her husband many friends and other family members. Now a great great grandmother she knows she is close to the end of her life and at the same time she has much yet to live for. Zechariah Stutzman is a great great grandfather also in his aging years and although he has many little ones running around him to keep him young, his family decided his best place is to be with his family because of his Parkinson’s disease which leave Zechariah feeling useless.This book is close to my heart because once working with the elderly I saw the desire to be useful, I loved how Kelly Irwin showed how the characters need to feel useful and loved does not change just because the age does. That we must remember to utilize that knowledge of our elderly. To show them the diginity and to remember to keep them busy with what they can do instead of focusing of what they can’t do. I believe Kelly tackeled some tough subjects in this book and showed with just a little extra effort we can have the golden years be the best years. Don’t miss your chance to read this wonderful series.
Another great Kelly Irvin read.In this book, Laura and Zechariah are in their 70s and find themselves dealing with aging and infirmary in addition to entertaining the thought of sharing a life together late in life.I loved that Laura and Zechariah portray true to life personalities, something Kelly does extremely well. Her characters are deep and well developed and the storyline keeps you reading deep into the night way past your bedtime.Excellent reading. Thank you so much Kelly Irvin for another home-run out of the ballpark!
I loved this book to. I just read 3 and had to buy 4. I think this was my favorite book of all4. I really enjoyed Laura and Zechariah. I would like to see a series centered around them. They were such a focal point of this book.

Sometimes, love is sweeter with age. This book is a meat read. We all make mistakes but its what we learn from them that makes us learn.
I’m one EXPERT reviewer for this book. Not that I’m that good, I’m that experienced. I’m age 70+, a post-widower gloriously bridled (equally yoked) a second time, basking in senior years. That’s this book’s theme, second chances. This novel offers a second chance for many characters in a fast read story of a midwife and her childhood school chum finding second love in those waning years confounded with health conditions and needing assistance. Sons and grandsons take on new second chance adventures as well. Of course expect a birth, or two, or three…after all Laura is the female co-protagonist and midwife. Zechariah, to whom I so-o-o-oo relate, is the curmudgeon co-protagonist struggling with “self-worth.†Well, if you can’t have your heart warmed by this Amish community of “With Winter’s First Frost,†then you must have a heart frostbitten. Gott bless you. You gotta love Zechariah, he’s a year-round bird watcher/feeder like myself.Kelly Irvin pulls off a unique four-book series, “An Every Amish Season,†leaving Amish readers wishing for another four. Truthfully, even non-Amish readers will be blessed by the stories in this series that relate to humanity generally. I’ve read, and heartedly recommend reading the entire series. I’d so-o-o love to sit down with Zechariah and Laura for cookies, kaffi, life-chat, a hug; wait, I guess I just did so in “With Winter’s First Frost.†It was gut, sweet, engaging…and hot. In choosing to tell a story of two characters in their seventies, Kelly Irvin tackles some sensitive issues related to aging. Debilitating illness, forgetfulness, frailty, the changing relationships with different generations of family, loss of independence, and the need to still feel useful despite all of those factors.Older characters are some of my personal favorites in fiction, but the downright surly nature of Zechariah Stutzman made it difficult to warm up to him. But as Laura Kauffman slowly sees what was attractive in him come out, and they each begin to warm up to the idea of an unlooked-for second The One, I was pulled along with her and could see the potential for them to have a life together.As they each deal with their families, and the sub-plots that swirl around them involving their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren , there are so many touching moments in this novel. And it was interesting to read the depictions of different aspects of Amish faith and tradition, as well as the way in which this fictional community deals with change.While not absolutely necessary to read this series in order, there are appearances by the rest of the group of four widowed friends and their relationships are discussed.
